South Yorkshire People United Against Crime

Anticipating Citizenship becoming part of the National Curriculum in 2002, People United Against Crime developed interactive classroom materials, which were made available via a dedicated website (www.citizenz.org).

People United Against Crime also organised a national conference on Citizenship.

Keynote speakers included the Right Honourable David Blunkett MP, Sectretary of State for Education and Employment and Professor Sir Bernard Crick, the government's adviser on the introduction of Citizenship into the national curriculum.

Continuing the theme of home security People United Against Crime worked with the four police forces in the region to address the continually recurring problem of distraction burglary.

These criminals, often described as 'bogus callers' trick their way into people's home, frequently by claiming to represent a utility such as electricity, water or gas service.

200,000 leaflets were produced for a targeted distribution to vulnerable households throughout the region.

Working with community police officers in deprived areas of Sheffield, People United Against Crime supported summer activities, which provided basketball coaching and competition for youngsters.

The programme came to national attention when People United Against Crime and the officers concerned were asked to lead a workshop at the Central Council for Physical Recreation Conference, demonstrating how sport can distract and deter youngsters from anti-social behaviour.
