South Yorkshire People United Against Crime

South Yorkshire TruckWatch is the largest and most successful in the county and is viewed as a model of good practice throughout England and Wales.

Originally information about lorry thefts and other freight crime was faxed to member companies. Advances in technology mean that drivers now receive voicemail alerts on their mobile phones.

South Yorkshire Police operates the communication network that alerts drivers. People United Against Crime provides newsletters, arranges events and provides other membership services.

During 2006 / 2007 there are plans to extend TruckWatch into a regional initiative covering the whole of Yorkshire and Humber.

Working in partnership with local parenting group 'C'mon Everybody' People United Against Crime was able to persuade local MP and Secretary of State for Education and Employment David Blunkett to be the keynote speaker at a national conference on parenting.

People United Against Crime's interest in organising this national event lay in the recognition that better pareting can be a solution to anti-social behaviour.

A wide range of other speakers included visiting professors from the USA and representatives of the Joseph Rowntree Trust.
