Surf and Snack Shack
The Surf and Snack Shack is based within the Penistone
Youth Centre was an idea based on research from the
Penistone Grammar School in November 2002 by the local
youth forum support staff. They found from their consultations
with young people that they would like (a need from
the young peoples point of view) an area in Penistone
where they could have access to multi media facilities
in the form of a Internet Café. At the time there
was no freely available Internet access apart from at
the Library and at School. The young people clearly
identified these as unattractive environments and therefore
don't use them to their full potential for learning
opportunities. The research implied that Penistone Youth
Centre would be more attractive to the young people.
The objectives of the Internet Café were aimed
at the 13 - 19 age group. Their intentions were to establish
and maintain a steering group for the project to get
young people/workers and individuals involved. Making
sure that the service is what the young people want
by satisfaction surveys, monitoring and feedback given
from the young people.
The funding agencies involved came up with some shared
aims and objectives such as, to develop their Youth
Centre in the use of Internet provision. Giving the
young people more versatile access to multi media and
accreditation training opportunities. Improve the member
base and attendance of the Youth Centre along with the
a fully integrated program with recreational activities
merged with training to raise the attainment and enhancing
social cohesion among the young people
